High-yield tree seedlings developed with scientists

With the support of leading scientists, LIMBUA developed particularly high-yielding plants for the highest quality macadamia nuts, Avocados and mangoes by evaluating data from Kenyan smallholder farmers in our own tree nursery. More than 200,000 organic macadamia tree seedlings have already been grown in this way. Due to its thick leaves, the macadamia tree also serves as a source of shade and protection against evaporation. Its roots prevent erosion and bind water to the surface. Thus, along with the tree, we also support the surrounding flora for a healthy ecosystem.

How to grow the Macadamia tree

To grow a macadamia tree the seedling should be planted in a location with well-draining soil, and it should receive plenty of sunlight and water. With proper care and maintenance, a macadamia tree seedling can grow into a healthy and productive tree that produces a bountiful crop of delicious and nutritious macadamia nuts.

  • Ensure that well composted manure is available; either boma (from livestock) or situ (from plant residues)
  • Dig a two feet cube hole in an orchard.
  • Dig the holes at 45 degree to each other (zigzag) for maximum sunlight to each tree
  • Mix one debe of manure with to soil and 50g of Mijingu fertilizer
  • Plant the seedling and then water adequately
  • Always use mulch to minimize water loss
  • Nimbecidine is used as an organic pesticide, while Green Copper is used as a fungicide.
  • With good management, the farmer should expect to harvest in the fifth year.
  • The peak yields however start after the tenth year.

In addition to the macadamia, the nursery also produces avocado, coffee and mango tree seedlings that are also offered to Kenyan smallholder farmers and African customers for their farms. This ensures that they receive plants for the best possible yield.

We sell the seedlings to our contracted smallholders and further African customers.
